Baxter III (originally named Durwood) was adopted from SouthEast Beagle Rescue in 2012 and has recently been returned to the rescue. Here is Baxter's original story: This handsome Beagle had only one loving owner from the time he was a puppy, but his life drastically changed when she had to go into a nursing home.  Sadly, Durwood’s unconditional love was repaid with his owner’s family leaving him at the pound.  You see, he lived a peaceful life thus far inside the house with his owner, but the rest of his owner’s family does not allow dogs into the house at all….. so they decided to give him up.

Durwood was then adopted by his second owner, renamed Baxter and lived a happy life for four more good years. But then he developed a thyroid imbalance which seems to cause him to drink a lot of water which then causes him to need to urinate frequently. As Baxter is very well housetrained, all would have been well if the family could have installed a dog door to the fenced back yard - but it was not to be. Instead, Baxter, now a sweet senior, is once again looking for a home. He is currently in a foster home with a dog door and there are absolutely no problems and his thyroid medication is inexpensive.

Baxter gets along very well with other dogs and will sometimes even play a bit although he is very low key. He very much wants to connect with his human and will regularly check in for a little conversation and some petting. Baxter's foster dad says he is a great dog, obedient and very low maintenance. Of course the thing Baxter loves most in life is food and he has learned at least three tricks we know of to earn a treat, sit up and beg (a very cute position!), lie down and roll over.

We do need to note that Baxter does not do well with cats!

Finally, it would be a shame not to mention one of his most outstanding features. Durwood has the most remarkably long tongue, which attracts attention from admiring passers by nearly every time we take him for a walk. It gently protrudes from his mouth just enough to make you wonder, “Is he sticking his tongue out or is it just like that?” Well, it is just like that!

If you have it in your heart to give a senior beagle a home, Baxter will certainly make the most wonderful addition to your family! He will melt your heart as soon as you get to know him!

BROOKE

Status: Available for Sponsorship

Adoption Fee: $175.00

Species: Dog

General Color: Tricolor (Tan/Brown & Black & White)

Color: Tri-Color

Current Size: 22 Pounds

Current Age: 4 Years 7 Months (best estimate)

Microchipped: Yes

BROOKE  was found as a stray with a damaged right front leg which they assumed was from being hit by a car, because she also had other road rash.  The local vet diagnoised BROOKE  having Radial Nerve Paralysis and suggested amputating her leg at the sholder.

More about Brooke

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

10/28/13: Examined by Dr Coronal who found no other damage other than to leg.  Could not find any reaction to deep pain in the leg and suggested consult with Dr Hay.

11/05/13:  BROOKE was examined by our surgeon, Dr Hay, who determined that she has a Brachial Plexus Avulsion. This is an injury in which the nerve roots under the armpit region have been torn away from their origin by trauma and is common when hit by a car. Surgery is not an option to correct this condition.  So the next “stop” will be Dr Fucci at Veterinarian Rehabilitation & Wellness Center to evaluate if physical therapy/stimulation will help the nerve to regain some function.  Will keep you posted.

11/06/13:    I felt a whole lot better walking out of Veterinary Rehabilitation & Wellness Center today than I did when I walked in with Brooke.  Dr Fucci confirmed that Brooke has radial nerve damage and said it is impossible to tell, at this point, if she will even partially recover use of her leg.  However, Dr Fucci was adamant that it is extremely important to keep the joints and muscles of the damaged leg extended and in good condition while waiting to see if the nerves heal.  If the muscles are allowed to just remain contracted and unused for an extended time, Brooke would never regain use of the leg, even if the nerves were to heal. So the therapy will include manual manipulation and exercise of the leg joints with neuromuscular electric stimulation.

There is a far better chance for a stimulated nerve to heal than one just left on its own, so Drs. Fucci and Perkins will use acupuncture and low-level laser therapy on the nerves as well as regenerative stem cell therapy using Brooke’s own adult stem cells.  We shall also look into the possibility of a canine orthotic brace specifically designed for dogs that have suffered this type of nerve damage.

11/14/13: Brook is undergoing rehabilitation  and doing well. Since the nerves grow very slowly it may be a couple of months before we will know if the nerve will heal.

It can take several months of therapy before there is any sign of the nerves regaining function, so we have estimated a cost of $3,850.00 to give Brooke the Beagle every chance to keep and regain use of her damaged leg.

If you would like to donate to help with Brooke’s medical expenses you can do so by using the PayPal button on our web site, www,sebr.org, or send your check to SouthEast Beagle Rescue, PO Box 270631, Tampa, FL 33688-0631.

Thank you!

Honey is around 10 years old - but is very young at heart. She likes to play and is very active. She goes on at least 2 walks a day, and still has energy to play in the yard - but also likes to be near her people. So if you are inside, she will probably prefer to be with you. She loves to snuggle up with you whenever she gets the chance. She is very smart and will do her best to let you know what she needs - If she needs to go outside, she will try to get your attention and then go wait by the door for you. If she drinks up all her water, she comes over and gives a little bark to let you know. She's very good with food and if you ask her to sit when you put her bowl down, she will wait for you to let her know when its OK to eat. She does get a little anxious when eating around other dogs, so a slow-feeder bowl works best for her. She is calm with strangers and children and lets the neighborhood kids come up and pet her while on walks. She lived in a home with a cat for much of her life, and while curious of other animals, is not aggressive with them. She has had sleepovers in homes with cats and has done well.  Honey would probably be best in a home as the only child, or with a laid back companion dog (or a cat). Having two other siblings in the home sometimes causes her to be anxious and wanting of attention. We have not had any issues with her health, she is up-to-date on her vaccines and she is not on any medication other than her monthly flea/tick/heartworm, and is well behaved at the vet. We've never had any issues with her at doggy daycare or overnight kenneling, she seems to do well in those social aspects, but seems to enjoy the reprieve of some alone time as well.

CAMILLA

Sweet Camilla is ready for her forever home! We don't know much about her history, but its a safe bet that life wasn't very kind to Miss Camilla... she was very shy when PAWS of NE LA pulled her from the high kill shelter that she found herself in. Now she has blossomed into a sweet and friendly young dog and is ready for a forever home thanks to The Chi Society!  Camilla is between 1-2 years old, and a petite 20 pounds. She appears to be a "Puggle" which is just a fancy name for a Pug x Beagle mix, and should not get any bigger. Camilla is quiet and easygoing, with a medium/low energy level. She's a great mix-happy to snuggle on the couch but loves to go on long walks as well. Camilla gets along with other dogs (she loves to play), but is not a fan of cats. She would prefer a home without small children, as she finds them a little overwhelming. Camilla is totally housetrained, crates well, is spayed, and is up to date on all vaccinations and heartworm prevention. Can you help this sweet little low rider get the happy ending she deserves? Please email us at TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for this sweetie!

MILLIE

Baby Millie came into a Louisiana high kill shelter in late summer.  She was scrawny and had trouble with one her back legs.  Local group PAWS of NE LA stepped in and Millie was saved.  We learned that the head of Millie’s femur was broken some time ago and had healed incorrectly.  She had to have been in terrible pain, but Millie faced every day with a wag of her tail and lots of kisses.  Millie had a "FHO" surgery or femoral head osteotomy… the broken head of her femur was removed.  Millie came through surgery and physical therapy like a champ and her vet reports she has made a full recovery!  Millie can now run, jump, play and live a pain free life like any normal pup.  As of late December, Millie is approximately 7 months old and 45#.  She is thriving!  Her foster mom says, “Millie is a rambunctious and sweet girl who loves to play and go everywhere with her person.  She loves to run and play, fetch, and eat.  She is good on or off of leash and loves to have a yard to run and play in.  She loves all dogs she comes across and plays with them all day long.  Millie loves any person she meets and is great with kids.  She loves to snuggle in bed and go on long walks.  She is a really special girl and deserves a special home.”  Millie has been around horses, goats and cats and is great on the farm.  She is able to go to work with her foster mom most days and is up for any new adventure.  She is a great road trip buddy and even loves visiting the vet.  Millie has also been know to sneak into the shower while her foster mom has the water on to warm up and will lie right down and relax under the spray.  She also loves making snap chat videos and having her person sing silly songs to her.  Please email us at TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for this beautiful Lab baby!

GRACIE LOU

Gracie’s foster mom calls her “Gracie Lou Freebush” (from the Miss Congeniality movies) because she is a little bit rough around the edges but she is a pretty girl who tries hard to please.  Gracie is a 3 year old 53#, Boxer & Hound mix.

Gracie was rescued from a high kill shelter in Louisiana and is now healthy and ready for a forever home up North.  She is house trained and crate trained.  Gracie pulls a bit on leash but is getting better… she would likely benefit from a halti or gentle leader for walks.  She knows how to sit for a treat (and she looooooves treats).  She loves everyone she meets and even gets excited about going for outings to the vet.  Gracie is excellent with kids and has been around ages 4-13.  Her size and energy level may not be a match for small children though.  The other dogs in Gracie’s foster home aren’t very playful but she has play dates with a friend’s Labrador and they play non-stop.  Gracie has not been tested with cats.  Gracie’s foster mom says, “She is a bundle of goofy energy who would prefer an active home. She loves to play and chase bugs in the yard. She gives tons of kisses and never turns down the chance for a belly rub.  While she is playful, she mostly loves to just be with her people and can be found under my feet while I cook dinner.”

Gracie is spayed, microchipped, current on vaccinations and current on monthly heartworm/flea prevention.  Upon rescue, she did test positive for heartworm but she breezed through treatment and is now heartworm free and ready for her forever home...please email us at TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for Miss Gracie Lou..:)

MARTA

If you are looking for blonde beauty with soulful eyes, then look no further!  Marta is a 55#, 2 year old Yellow Lab mix.  Marta came into a Louisiana high kill shelter as a stray.  No owner came looking for the starved girl and she was in danger of being euthanized despite being a complete sweetheart.

Local group PAWS of NE LA stepped in and Marta was saved.  She is now fat, healthy and looking for her forever home up north thanks to The Chi Society.  Marta has the personality of a dog that has seen lots of not so good things in her life.  Her big brown eyes seem to see right through you.  She is so appreciative of the finer things in life and loves lounging on the cough, sleeping in the bed with her foster mom and playing with toys.  She can be shy when she first meets new people and prefers a calmer household so homes with lots of activity and young kids probably wouldn’t be Marta’s idea of fun.  If you are looking for a chill but playful companion who loves car rides, walks and cuddle time, then Marta is your girl!

When Marta was first rescued, she was shy around new dogs and would snap if they got into her space at home too soon.  Her foster mom has done a great job socializing her and she now loves playing with other dogs (just check out her videos) but she may take a little time to warm up to new dogs.  Marta has been around horses and cats and does fine with both.  Marta’s foster mom says, “oh how I love this girl!  Marta is an ‘old soul’ who may be a little slow to warm up but when she does, you have a friend for life.  She loves riding in the car and going for walks.  She is also pretty great about making snapchat videos with me and letting me dress her up in costumes!  As if those brown eyes weren’t enough, her little underbite makes her even more irresistible!  She loves treats, cow hooves and naps on the couch.  She is an extra special girl and deserves an extra special home.”  Please email us at TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for this yellow beauty!

Marta is spayed, microchipped, current on vaccinations and current on monthly heartworm/flea prevention.   Upon rescue she did test positive for heartworm but breezed through treatment and is now heartworm free and ready for her forever home.

HONEY

Emma Pearl

Hey there! I'm Emma Pearl...aren't I a pretty girl? I'm also the sweetest dog! I'm about a year old and I weigh about 45-50 pounds. I'm not sure why but some awful person dumped me out on a rural road. Thank goodness though that I was rescued! Since then I've been so happy and I've proven to my foster that I'm awesome. ;) I'm excellent with kids and I absolutely love playing with other dogs! I'm so hoping to find my forever home soon!
Please email TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for me or to inquire further about how I can be yours...:)

Meet the Princely Oscar...he's approximately a year old! Message from him: I weigh about 45 pounds and I'm super handsome...if you look at my eyes they match my coat! I am very smart and eager to learn and please; I sit on command (especially for treats ;) ) I love to run and play with other dogs and kids and I absolutely LOVE to be petted. I do like to chase cats though so a home without kitties would be best. I was found by animal control wondering the streets trying to find food in a dumpster. :( I have been known to climb a chain link fence so a wooden fence would be best for me.

I'm so thankful that I was rescued from the shelter and now live with my foster Mom. She's the best but I would love to have the chance to be a part of my own family.

Please email TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for me today!

PRINCE OSCAR

Simba

Simba is an adult (7 year old) male Australian Shepherd/Keeshond mix in central CT. He loves attention, is very loving and protective of his family but he must be placed in a home (such as a farm or similar) where he can run and roam...he gets bored easily, can jump high and can breeze right through an electric fence ...:) He'd be a great hunting dog but has a high prey drive, so no cats, please! He could probably benefit from some training, to hone his skills....

If you are a hunter, a farmer in need of a good farm dog or someone who has a large area of property for a dog .... please email us at TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for this big, strong boy!

Camilla

Miss Camilla is waiting for her very own family to love! This friendly and gentle young dog found herself at a high kill shelter last year. She was pulled by PAWS of NELA, and has now been in foster care for almost a year. "Millie" is 2-3 years old, a petite 20 pounds, and appears to be a Pug mix. She has a short, slightly wavy coat and sheds much less than average. Millie is that perfect combination-quiet in the house, but always ready for an adventure! She loves to go for walks, and is a surprisingly good running partner. She is great with other dogs and loves to play, although she is not a fan of cats. Totally house trained and crates well, although she is trustworthy enough that her foster mom leaves her loose in he house.

Millie is shy but polite when meeting new people. She recently went to a pet parade, and met literally dozens of people of all ages. She was a perfect lady! She tends to bond deeply, and would really love to have her very own "furrever" person to love. Can you help this sweet little low rider get the happy ending she deserves?

He gets along with his brothers and sisters in foster care and is the type that's protective of his 'person'.....please email us at TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for our wonderful Linus!

Pepper

Pepper is a darling girl who always has one ear at attention! She has a soft brindle coat and soulful puppy dog eyes. Sweet Pepper was rescued from a high kill shelter in Louisiana. She is a little over 1 year old and has adjusted to life with a foster family well. Pepper’s foster mom says, “Pepper is a great dog and will be a perfect addition to someone’s family! She is sleeping throughout the night in a kennel with her foster sister, and is almost completely housetrained. She goes outside and comes back in on command. She does well with her kennel when we have to leave and she does not fuss. She does very well with other dogs—she jumped right into a home with two existing fur babies. She seems like the type of dog that needs companionship with another dog. We do not have any cats around so I’m not sure how she would do with cats. She first is pretty shy around new people but warms up pretty quickly. It took us a little while to get her used to a harness but she now can wear one with no problems. She is not a fan of the leash but she is slowly getting better with it. Pepper is very uncomfortable around smaller children but I think would do well with middle-aged kids.”

  • Current Size: 37 Pounds

  • Current Age: 5 Years 7 Months (best estimate)

New Arrival: BRUNO came to us because his owner dumped him at a vet office because the did not want to care for him any more.  We were told that BRUNO was a senior and was blind. The office manager called SEBR instead of the local pound,  where his chance of survival would have been very slim.  BRUNO was examined by our eye vet who thinks his condition is caused by an underlying infection. He is on 3 different eye meds and will be having extensive blood work done. We are not sure if there will be any improvement in Bruno's sight but if we do nothing it may only get worse.

Regardless of his situation, he is a sweet, happy boy who loves a good scratch. He would be great for an empty nest family, or an older family without small kids.  Bruno deserves a second chance where he knows he will be taken care of and loved.

BRUNO is Available only for Sponsorship at this time until we can get a better handle on what is causing the issue with his eyes.
